Autism Movement Therapy Classes
Autism Movement Therapy Classes

Start Date: May. 25, 2013
Time: 10:00 AM

The Herkimer ARC will host Autism Movement Therapy (AMT) classes on Saturdays for children, teens, and adults, ages 4 to 23+, beginning May 4 through June 8, at the agency’s exercise/dance studio at the Gail W. Brown Center, 411 Folts Street in Herkimer, NY. AMT classes are fun and involve music and dance. Classes are not only offered to individuals with autism, but also for people with developmental and learning disabilities. Hour-long classes, with times scheduled for different age groups, will be led by Kaylan Comes, who is a certified Autism Movement Therapy Coach. Beginning times for classes include: ages 4 to 8 at 10 a.m., ages 9 to 12 at 11:30 a.m., ages 13 to 15 at 1 p.m., ages 16 to 22 at 2:30 p.m., and ages 23+ at 4 p.m. The cost per six-class session is $60 with a maximum of 10 people per class. Scholarships are available. Participants from Herkimer and neighboring counties are welcome to attend. AMT classes are an empowering sensory integration strategy that connects both the left and right brain hemispheres by combing patterning, visual movement calculation, audile receptive processing, rhythm and sequencing into a “whole brain” cognitive thinking approach to significantly improve behavioral, emotional, academic, social, and speech language skills. This “waking up the brain” is the core of Autism Movement Therapy classes. Scientists know activities, such as AMT, can often jump start impaired informational pathways or even create new pathways through a process called cognitive redirection. The program was created by Joanne Lara, who is an autism education expert and an adjunct Special Education faculty member at National University. She has written extensively about environmental toxins and autism, and presents lectures and certification workshops throughout the US. In June 2011, Lara was appointed Technical Advisor/Consultant for Kiefer Sutherland’s FOX TV pilot Touch. Kiefer’s television character has a 10-year-old non-verbal son with high functioning autism.
