SUNY Oneonta Gallery Feature Retrospective Exhibit of Work by Da

Start Date: Nov. 11, 2013
End Date: Dec. 20, 2013
Time: 11:00 AM

SUNY Oneonta will feature an exhibition of more than 100 works by the recently deceased prolific local artist David Byrd beginning next week. “David Byrd: Seeing What is There, Sketches, Paintings, Sculpture” opens Nov. 11 and runs through Dec. 20 at the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery in the college’s Fine Arts Center. Byrd worked in relative seclusion over the past 25 years in the Catskill Mountains near Sidney Center, N.Y. Local artists Jody Isaacson and Jessica Farrell, who live near Byrd’s home and studio, discovered his work and have been instrumental in encouraging its public display. They, along with Byrd, visited the Martin–Mullen Art Gallery and were excited at the prospect of having an exhibition there. However, earlier this year, Byrd became seriously ill, and he passed away on May 30. While he was still alive, he witnessed the great success of his artwork shown at the Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle. The exhibition in the Martin–Mullen Art Gallery celebrates Byrd’s life and artistic accomplishments. The show includes an extensive number of drawings, which relate to many of the paintings and give a view into the process and development of Byrd’s art. Works in this exhibition are shown courtesy of the Estate of David Byrd and the Greg Kucera Gallery. Isaacson, Farrell and Kucera will be present at the public reception and will give a gallery talk about Byrd’s artwork and life on Thursday, Nov.14, at 6 p.m. in the gallery. The public is welcome to attend. The Martin-Mullen Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday when the college is in session and during special events.
